I handle free time badly…

Have been reading the papers that I have blogged about earlier. Nothing really new for me at least. Have been reading some of the papers earlier and have heard of most of the stuff also. Hopefully I can use some of it as reference. It was pretty clear that it was old papers from 1998 and alike since talking about ambient displays as something new and experimental feels well very much 1998… The future they predict is the present we live in right now.

The thing about adding another layer of interactivity fore my piece have I been thinking some about. Have one simple idea about applying the same color pattern that is seen on the wall in a much smaller form factor at the specific meters. One problem is that with my technical solution it doesn’t permit that… There is another one but that will cost much more to produce so once again it comes down to a very boring question about CASH. Will talk to the school and see if they are interested in supporting with some pesetas.

Todays goal is to read some more papers about color and hopefully get hold of the only paper I have found about physiological responses to color. Will also test out the wireless connection and maybe start some coding. Will see how it feels.

Today I watched Arty which was aired a couple of days ago at SVT. The topic was color. Really interesting to see how artists is using this in their art. Especially the American artist Spencer Finch and his work with the Hudson river. Taking this every changing color palette and visualize it. Like that work. Hopefully my work will be the same high standard.

Having my light wall and thinking of how I want it to behave and react to different levels of electricity consumption I have come up with a language of color that I will wash the wall with. It is based on the papers I have been reading during the week so there will be some academic to back it all up.

I have decided that firstly I want to develop a language with three different states that will be fading between.

It is:

Low consumption

Ordinary Consumption

High Consumption

Low consumption

I want to evoke feelings of calmness, happy, peaceful, and other positive emotions. To create this Im going to use the colors green and cyan/blue. This combination has the above stated affect but also it is supposed to have a very attention bringing side effect. Since having a very low energy consumption is something that people should be aware of and show of to friends and family having a color combination that does that is favorable. This color combination also have many connections to nature with trees, forest, ocean and sky which also fits nicely into my projects environmental side and it is said to be restfull to the eyes.

Ordinary Consumption

Since ordinary consumption is probably the thing that will mostly be displayed I don’t want it to bring to much attention and it should be a little but more discreet than the other two states.

One color that will be used for this state is purple. It is generally regarded as an discreet color and it is one of the colors that attracts the least attention. It is also a nice mix between the high consumption colors and the low consumption ones. The color that Im going to mix this with is a harder decision. Im thinking of adding pink here but Im not sure of how that mix is going to look. Pink has some nice qualities such as being considered as warm, romantic, enjoying, and striking. This could fit nicely into my project but dont know if it to attention bringing. Think I will have to do more test about that.

High Consumption

For the high consumption mode I want to create attention to the wall and also put across a negative attitude. The primary colors here will be yellow and red. Red is a color that people expericence as it advances against them and that it is much closer than it really is. It is also high in the attention range which is favorable. References people have to this color is a mixed bag of both positive and negative emotions. There is both the heart love category but also many references to hate, blood and anger. Red is a very powerful color and many have different relations to it but I think it will fit in this category.
